Costa Concordia Survivors Angry At Captain’s Light Sentence

Hey gang and Good Evening to you all! Jax here and I thought I would let you know about the survivors of the Costa Concordia disaster. Now, with the disaster, the ship scraped along some rocks off of an island, and the ship began to tip to one side.  Anyone remember the Titanic? Yeah, it was sort of like that, but it did not sink, the ship just tipped over to one side, and only 32 people died, which isn’t bad considering there were over 2000 on board. The fault of the whole disaster is the captain, Francesco Schettino, and for reasons only he knows, he drove the ship way too close to those rocks, and then to make matters worse, he bailed when most of his passengers were still on board, which is a big time criminal offense in Italy.

The captain went on trial for almost two years, and he was convicted of the 32 passenger deaths, and leaving the ship early. Schettino was only given 16 years, and the survivors of the disaster are not happy because they wanted him to go to jail for what happened that terrible night. To the survivors of the disaster, 16 years is nothing more than an insult because they were assured by the prosecutor that Schettino would go away for over 20 years or even as many as 32, but that did not happen.

To add insult to injury, with the Italian appeal process, Schettino can delay reporting to jail for up to 5 years, which again, is not making the survivors happy.

While it is horrible that people died while on the Costa Concordia, the fact the captain abandoned ship early, and when prompted to go back, he claimed his leaving was an accident, he should be punished more for what happened, but the Italian court decided to only give him 16 years.  The captain always goes down with his ship, at least that is the way it should be, but apparently not for Schettino, and even if he does avoid jail for some time, the fact is that eventually  those appeals will dry up, and then he will have to serve his time.

Those that died on the Costa Concordia will get their justice, even if it is delayed a little bit.
